Endodontics

Endodontics, more commonly known as root canal treatment procedures, refers to treating the dental pulp and the root canals.  Endodontic treatment includes root canal treatment, and may require further treatment as resection and post/core treatments.  Root canal treatment involves opening the tooth, removing the damaged pulp, cleaning, shaping, filling, and sealing the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that is used to find and treat diseases of the tooth pulp. Tooth pulp is the tissue inside the roots of the teeth that contains all the nerves and blood vessels that nourish the tooth. Under local anaesthetics, the tooth is opened through the crown and any remaining tooth pulp is then removed.  The remaining root canal will then be cleaned and enlarged so that it can easily be filled. Once the root canal has been cleaned out and shaped, the root filling will be sealed tightly into the root canal. The tooth may then be restored with a filling.

Root Resection

Root resection refers to an endodontic surgical procedure to remove an inflamed tissue or cyst from the tip of the root or an untreatable, fractured, or dissolving root while retaining the original major tooth's structure. During this procedure, under local anaesthetics, an incision is made in the gums and the untreatable, infected tissue is removed at the tip of the root. A small filling is then placed in the root tip and the gums are stitched back to the original position.

Post and Core

Sometimes a tooth treated for root canal problems is badly broken and needs to be build up before a replacement crown can be fitted over it. A post-and-core is a metal rod component cemented into the root of a tooth that has had previous root canal therapy.  It consists of a Post that is fitted into the root canal and a Core portion that projects above the gum.
